Contemporary and Traditional Wool Rugs: Decorating Tips

The first thing is that area rugs are essential to any room design.  They are the actual foundation of the room just as you have a foundation to a building.  The area rug will support a room due to its tying all of the different elements together visually.  For this very reason, many professional designers will begin their projects by choosing an area rug.

Wool is a good choice for an area rug because it is versatile and durable.  It has a natural resistance to stains and is great for high traffic areas for that reason as well as because they are able to retain their shape even after being trampled on or having heavy furniture sitting on top of them.  Also, they come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors.

Speaking of colors, the colors that are in a rug allow for a sort of palate to be developed for the entire room.  Use the colors that are in the rug for the walls and upholstery to create a space that is completely harmonious.  The pattern in the rug will help in determining the other patterns and textures that can be incorporated into that room.

Your wool area rug will generally cover a lot of floor space, so using it as a focal point is actually quite simple.  These rugs can have a massive impact on a room while not even needing to be visually arresting.  Create a bit of contrast when you paint the walls a color that will echo the accent colors in the rug.  If the rug is light colored then opt for a darker color on the walls or vice versa.

Area rugs can also be helpful when it comes to placing your furniture.  They can separate or define areas like foyers, dining and even seating areas.  It has become common to have floating furniture as opposed to having sofas anchor a wall.  Today, furniture is pulled away from the walls to give the room a feel that is more spacious and using area rugs go a long way in supporting the placement of furniture and defining areas. This is great for home remodels and interior redesigns.

The type of wool rug that you use can determine the total mood of that space.  Choose one that is quiet for spaces that are serene and restful.  Go for richly colored, bold rugs for rooms that you want to have strength and energy.  You can also use the wool rug to visually change how the room feels according to its colors and patterns.
